Shopmium – can you really get free groceries?

What is Shopmium?

Shopmium is a cashback app that allows you to get money back when you buy. It offers exclusive deals on a wide range of products, from food and drink to beauty and personal care.

To use Shopmium, simply browse the app for offers you like, tap to activate them, buy your items at almost any store, then submit your receipt to get cash back.

How do I use Shopmium?

To use Shopmium, simply follow these steps:

Download the Shopmium app use the code B777VE when you register to get a free bag of Cadbury Giant Buttons too!

Make sure you pay attention to which supermarkets the offer is valid on – most offers can only be used in a specific supermarket, or in a few specific supermarkets, but this is set out clearly. Along the top, you can filter by supermarket.

I would add that, through no fault of Shopmium who are relying on the information the supermarket is providing, sometimes an item will say it is in a store, but in fact it isn’t. For this reason, I would recommend only using Shopmium as it fits into your normal schedule, or without going too much out of your way, to avoid disappointment.

When you find the product you want – check the barcode to make sure it’s eligible.

Buy the product (scan the ge code first to check eligible) and make sure to get a receipt. Then submit this to Shopmium. The app directs you, and you’ll scan the product barcode too.

I always do this in the store because it only takes a few seconds – either at self-checkout, or I just find a surface to put the receipt on. This way saves me forgetting when I get home!

I find I typically get my cashback within a few days – and this is paid directly to my bank account!

If you see an offer you like, make sure to click the love heart to save it, so it’s easy to find when you get to the supermarket!

Can I get more than one item?

This fully depends on the offer – I would say the standard is that you can get one of each item. However, this isn’t always the case.

So when you open the Shopmium app, it will look like this.

After clicking in you will usually see a carousel – this means you can only buy one of the item, meaning that you can’t choose more than one variety or flavour.

However, sometimes you will see a grid – this means that you can purchase one of each of the items from the grid (which may have their own carousel within, just to confuse you more)

And on top of that, every now and again, regardless of whether it is a grid or carousel, you can sometimes buy more than one of an item for the same offer – Shopmium will make this clear though if that is the case.

When should I submit my receipt?

Personally, I think the best time to submit your receipt is before you leave the store.

I tend to pay at self-checkout, then just do it there and then.

When submitting to Shopmium, you may as well also submit to Amazon Shopper Panel (10 receipts a month = £5 Amazon credit – waitlist is long) and Shoppix (much, much less valuable but worth doing if scanning anyway in the shop).

Why is Shopmium asking me to write on the receipt?

So every now and again, you will see that Shopmium asks you to cross out an item and write “refunded by Shopmium” or something similar to that.

The reason for this is clearly to prevent fraud, so I assume in the past they have had problems with people returning items after buying them and claiming the cashback.

When it asks me to do this, I actually just take a photo of my normal receipt, just to make sure I get the request submitted. Then when I get home, I write on my receipt (this is on the assumption I don’t have a pen with me when out and about) and then just use the add photo option – this is the best way for me because at least it means I get the request in, albeit incomplete.

Can I shop at any retailer?

Shopmium offers deals at a wide range of retailers, including Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Asda, Morrisons, The Co-op, Waitrose, Boots, Holland & Barrett, and WHSmith and many more!

Just make sure sure you shop at the right retailer – all offers can only be redeemed at the retailers set out.

If I am about to go to a specific supermarket anyway, then I just filter using the options at the top (these aren’t all the options).

If I am at home, and wondering what’s available, I just click into each offer to see where I can redeem it.

Is every offer worth it?

No – there are only two types of offer that are worth it – the ones that are completely free, or the ones that you would buy anyway at an after-cashback price.

The ones that are free – even if you won’t use yourself, its a great chance to donate to a food bank if non-perishable.

Are other similar apps available?

Yes, I would also recommend using the following:-

  • GreenJinn – This is the next best app out there – lots of freebies on there, and the minimum £2 payout is easy to hit,
  • CheckoutSmart – Unfortunately, this has definitely gone downhill in recent years, to the extent that I barely remember to check it. If you don’t payout over £20, you pay a 5% fee on cash outs, but the offers just aren’t what they used to be.
  • TopCashback – Often, this amazing website gives you cashback on certain items you buy in-store, especially at seasonal times.

Now here are a few concerns you raised on Instagram:-

The offers aren’t as great as they used to be?

This is something I wouldn’t agree with to be honest – but I think as with all grocery cashback apps

For example, at the time of writing, I was able to get free dog treats and free cat treats yesterday, which is an amazing offer! But sometimes there will be weeks

What if this leads to me overspending?

The important thing to remember i

Ultimately Shopmium is there to provide marketing services to its clients – the brand wants you to buy their product, and Shopmium wants you to buy the brand’s product, but that doesn’t mean you have to!

What are bonus credits?

You can earn bonus credits in a number of ways – if you refer somebody (my code is B777VE), then they get a free gift and you get £3 credit.

Shopmium also often run bonus offers – sometimes

I am also a Shopmium ambassador so at the time of writing, I am gifted £50 credit every three months with no obligation to post. This is to recognise the work I already put in sharing how great Shopmium is with my community – I have been using and sharing the app for years, and I have only recently been invited to be an ambassador – such that so far I have received £50 in credit.

Need more staple cupboard items?

I guess to be blunt, Shopmium isn’t there to provide you with a wide range of what you need – it’s there because its paid by brands to promote their products.

Saying that though, you’d be surprised how often items that are considered staples do pop up on the app.

Most things are unhealthy so you don’t want them?

Then don’t buy them.

Can’t find the items?

This is a common problem with the app and it is, to an extent, out of Shopmium’s hands

It takes too long to payout.

The verifications and payouts are taking longer as the app gets busier, but it still only takes a few days for me!

Overall verdict

If you ever step foot outside of your house and walk close to or go to supermarkets, then this app is a must-have!
